Coal

Coal is a mined resource used to refuel furnaces and produce Graphite. When preparing to make Iron ingot or Steel ingot, keep fuel supplies separate from recipe ingredients.

Take a pick to the coal deposit on the northern cliff near the Quarry. Each mining action yields 20–30 Coal. Leave room in your inventory before setting out; a stack holds up to 100.

To reach the northern area, repair the stone bridge west of the Old graveyard and clear the debris along the road. Alternatively, clear the blockage north of the Apiary and cross the river by the footbridge. Once north, look along the cliff face for the deposit.

Another deposit south of the wheat farm lies inside the town and cannot be reached. A mining icon may appear when you approach from above, but that does not make the deposit accessible. This page focuses on manual mining rather than setting up automated mines.

The table compares the base fuel conversion in three furnaces, using batches of 10 Coal. Fuel is added to the workstation's reserve; it is not a new inventory item.

The same amount of Coal supplies more base fuel in Furnace II and Furnace III. For Graphite processing below, you also need Coal as a separate recipe ingredient.

In the Building branch, unlock Mining, then Precious Metals for the Graphite recipe. Unlock the equipment separately: Advanced Smelting provides Furnace II, while Iron Castings provides Furnace III.

The five Coal per batch are ingredients. The extra cost of 10 is measured in fuel units, not another 10 Coal or player energy. Furnace III produces twice as much Graphite from the same input and finishes 20 seconds sooner.
