Graphite is processed from Coal and used to smelt Steel ingot. Once studied, it can also be ground into Graphite powder for alchemy. Set aside both the recipe ingredients and fuel when planning production.

Obtaining

In the Building branch, unlock Mining, then research Precious Metals to unlock Graphite processing. Use a Furnace II or Furnace III and supply it with fuel.

The furnace technologies are separate: Advanced Smelting unlocks Furnace II, while Iron Castings unlocks Furnace III. You need a suitable workstation as well as the Graphite recipe.

For the same five Coal and 10 fuel, Furnace III doubles the output and finishes 20 seconds sooner. The five Coal are recipe ingredients; the extra cost of 10 is measured in fuel units, not pieces of Coal or player energy.

Steel ingot

Each batch combines two Iron ingot with one Graphite to make two Steel ingot. Both furnaces use the same materials, but differ in fuel, processing time and technology points.

Graphite powder

Study Graphite at the Study Table first. Then use the Alchemy mill to grind 1 Graphite into 2 Graphite powder. Grinding consumes the Graphite, so keep a separate supply for Steel ingot production.
